Shortage of gas in Limbe

Domestic gas prices rise as supply shortages hit consumers in Limbe

By Christabel Kumi, UB Journalism Student on internship

Residents of Limbe in Cameroon’s South-West Region are facing difficulties accessing domestic cooking gas as supply shortages and distribution challenges continue to affect availability and prices.

The situation is raising concerns among households, restaurants and food vendors who depend on cooking gas for their daily activities. Some consumers say they have been forced to move from one sales point to another in search of gas, while others fear that prolonged shortages could lead to further price increases.

The official consumer price for a 12.5-kilogramme cylinder of domestic gas remains 6,500 CFA francs. However, consumers say shortages and irregular supplies can make it difficult to obtain the product at the regulated price.

Gas sellers in Limbe say availability largely depends on the regularity and quantity of supplies delivered to the town. When deliveries are delayed or insufficient, demand increases at the few outlets with gas in stock, leaving many customers searching for alternatives.

For low-income households, the situation can create additional financial pressure. Families that rely on gas for cooking may have to spend more money and time moving between sales points when their cylinders become empty.

Food vendors and restaurants are also affected because cooking gas is an essential part of their daily operations. Any additional cost increases their expenses and could eventually force some businesses to raise the prices of prepared meals.

Consumers are particularly concerned about the possibility of paying more than the regulated price when supplies become scarce. With many households needing gas regularly, limited availability can put pressure on customers to buy from any outlet where the product is available.

The difficulties also highlight challenges within the distribution chain. Growing demand, transportation difficulties and irregular deliveries can make it harder for retailers to maintain sufficient stocks.

For residents, the problem is therefore not only the official price but also availability. A cylinder may be affordable at the regulated price, but this provides little relief to consumers who cannot find gas when they need it.

Some residents are calling for more regular deliveries to gas sales points across Limbe. They believe that ensuring adequate supplies reach retailers would help reduce shortages, discourage panic buying and limit the possibility of consumers being charged higher prices.

Gas sellers, meanwhile, depend on distributors to provide enough products to meet customer demand. When deliveries are irregular, retailers are unable to satisfy customers, creating pressure at the few outlets that still have gas.

Small businesses operating on limited budgets may be particularly vulnerable to continued shortages and price increases. Restaurants, roadside food vendors and other businesses that use gas daily may have little room to absorb additional expenses.

Residents are therefore urging distributors and relevant authorities to strengthen the supply chain and ensure that Limbe receives regular and adequate supplies of domestic cooking gas.

For consumers, reliable availability remains as important as maintaining the official price. As households and businesses continue to depend on cooking gas every day, improved distribution could help ease the pressure currently faced by consumers in Limbe.
