Kumba I Council Hosts International Youth Day Celebration, Calls for Greater Youth Participation in Policy Making.
Youths of Kumba I Municipality on Wednesday joined young people across the world to commemorate the 2026 International Youth Day, celebrated under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations “
Hosted by the Kumba I Sub-Divisional Council, the celebration brought together youths from across the municipality, government officials, youth organizations and other stakeholders for a day of reflection, advocacy and entertainment.
At the heart of the celebration was a clarion call for greater youth participation in policy-making and decision-making processes. Participants stressed the need to move beyond viewing young people merely as beneficiaries of development and instead recognize them as important partners and actors in shaping the future of their communities.
In his welcome address, the Lord Mayor of Kumba I Council, Barrister Prince Eseme Moses Esembe, challenged the youths of the municipality to distinguish themselves as role models and responsible citizens.
The Mayor urged the young people to prioritize their education, acquire useful skills and make responsible choices, while strongly warning against drug abuse and other forms of delinquency capable of destroying their future.
He encouraged the youths to channel their energy, creativity and talents towards activities that contribute positively to the development of Kumba I Municipality and the nation at large.
On her part, Mme Decland Emade, Sub Delegate of MINJEC for Kumba I emphasized the power of determination and personal commitment in transforming young people into effective nation builders and peace ambassadors.
She called on the youths to remain focused, resilient and committed to their goals, stressing that with effort and determination, they can overcome challenges and become meaningful contributors to peace and development.
The celebration was chaired by the Assistant Divisional Officer for Kumba I, in the presence of the Divisional Delegate for Youth Affairs and Civic Education (MINJEC), Sub-Delegates from the other subdivisions, representatives of the Cameroon National Youth Council, youth associations and other stakeholders.
Beyond the speeches and advocacy, the celebration provided a vibrant platform for young people to showcase their talents and cultural heritage. The programme featured cultural performances, drama, playback performances and other entertainment activities, creating an atmosphere of excitement and togetherness as youths celebrated their special day.
International Youth Day is commemorated annually on 12 August to draw attention to issues affecting young people and celebrate their potential as partners in development, peace and society.
