The Governor of the South-West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, has been honoured with the prestigious traditional title of “Mola Eyole” by the chiefs of Buea in recognition of his contribution towards peace, unity, and social cohesion in the region.
The symbolic conferment ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, during activities marking Cameroon’s 54th National Day celebration in Buea. The solemn event brought together traditional rulers, notables, administrative authorities, and invited guests in an atmosphere filled with cultural pride and appreciation.
The title “Mola Eyole,” which means “True Peace” in the Bakweri language, was bestowed on the Governor by the traditional rulers led by the President of the Buea Chiefs’ Conference, HRM Chief Ikome Philip Mokwa. According to the chiefs, the honour reflects Governor Okalia Bilai’s tireless efforts in promoting peaceful coexistence, national integration, and stability in the South-West Region during challenging times.
In their declaration, the chiefs praised the governor’s leadership and commitment to dialogue, noting that his actions have contributed significantly to ongoing efforts aimed at restoring normalcy and rebuilding confidence among communities affected by the socio-political crisis.
“We, the chiefs of Buea, recognize the tireless efforts of His Excellency Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai in maintaining peace, national integration, and living together,” the traditional rulers declared during the ceremony.
Receiving the distinction, Governor Okalia Bilai expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people of Buea for the honour. He dedicated the title to all peace-loving citizens of the South-West Region and called on traditional authorities to continue serving as ambassadors of peace, unity, and reconciliation within their communities.
The event added a strong cultural and symbolic touch to the 54th National Day celebrations, which many residents described as a renewed affirmation of peace, resilience, and national unity in the South-West Region.
