The Diocese of Buea witnessed a profound moment of gratitude and celebration on Friday, July 25, 2025, as His Lordship Michael Miabesue Bibi marked his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination. The silver jubilee event, commemorated through a solemn thanksgiving Mass at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral in Molyko, Buea, drew hundreds of faithful from all corners of the diocese, alongside priests, religious, state dignitaries, and ecclesiastical leaders.
At the heart of the celebration was a powerful homily delivered by His Grace Andrew Fuanya Nkea, Archbishop of Bamenda and President of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon (NECC). He called on Christians to celebrate “God’s choice” in the life of Bishop Bibi rather than Bibi’s own choice for priesthood. “You have served with perseverance and dedication. The God who called you by name will see you through,” Archbishop Nkea affirmed, referencing John 15:16: “You did not choose me, but I chose you.”
Bishop Bibi’s journey began in Bamenda, where he was ordained on April 26, 2000. His commitment and spiritual zeal quickly distinguished him, leading to successive high-profile appointments, first as Auxiliary Bishop of Bamenda, then as Apostolic Administrator of Buea by Pope Francis in December 2019, and ultimately as the Bishop of Buea following his episcopal consecration on January 5, 2021.
The anniversary celebration was as much a reflection of his personal faith as it was a testament to the impact he has had on the community. Christians from parishes stretching from Buea to Idenau turned up in large numbers with generous gifts; livestock, fish, household items, and financial contributions symbolising their heartfelt appreciation for his ministry and spiritual guidance.
Bishop Bibi’s influence transcends spiritual boundaries. His contributions to education, particularly in hard-to-reach areas such as Muyuka, Ekata, Munyenge, and Bafia, have transformed lives and communities. He has championed evangelisation across the diocese and has become a beacon of hope through initiatives that promote spiritual growth and youth development.
In recognition of his outstanding church leadership, he was honoured in 2023 with the “Church Management Torchbearer Award” by NewsWatch Newspaper. Described as an “apostle of hope,” Bishop Bibi’s legacy lies in his unwavering commitment to the Gospel, people-centered leadership, and his ability to inspire joy and unity in challenging times.
The celebration also served as a platform for renewed unity within the clergy and laity.
The Governor of the South West Region and other high-profile guests joined in the ceremony, further underscoring the bishop’s societal influence beyond church walls.
As Bishop Bibi continues his pastoral mission, his 25-year journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of service rooted in faith, humility, and love for the people of God. His story continues to inspire a new generation of clergy and faithful across Cameroon and beyond.
Tributes and Words of Gratitude
James Vefonge (Chairman of the Pastoral Council) highlights the Bishop’s achievements:
“In four years, Bishop Bibi has led the near-completion of the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral, the construction of the Pastoral Centre, and modern infrastructure projects in Tiko and Limbe. He has overseen the renovation of Catholic colleges and the expansion of the Catholic University to Douala. Financially, he has initiated the Microfinance Bank, and in pastoral ministry, more than 40 parishes are now operational, with new ones in Mutengene and Bafia. The Catholic Mortuary at Mt. Mary honours the dignity of the dead. In communications, DMRTV continues to spread the light of hope.”
Rev. Fr. Anyawu (Vicar for Priests) expresses the clergy’s gratitude:
“We appreciate your fatherly guidance, your kindness and patience, and the encouragement that sustains us through challenges. May you continue to carry us in your compassionate leadership.”
Dr. Emmanuel Bibi (family representative) says:
“I remember how he always desired to become a priest. After our father passed, I made it my mission to support his calling. Today, he is a man of faith, unwavering and uncompromising in his love for the Church.”
Archbishop Andrew Nkea, (on behalf of the NECC):
“Your Bishop brothers, through me, send their congratulations and prayers. As head of the NECC’s Communication Commission, they hope Divine Mercy TV will rise to become a national Catholic television channel.”
A Bishop’s Reflection
In his closing remarks, Bishop Bibi expressed profound gratitude to all who attended and supported his journey. Speaking to the press, he said: “This celebration is not only about thanksgiving but also reflection. It’s time to evaluate what has been done, identify where I have succeeded, and acknowledge areas that need improvement so that with God’s grace, I may continue to serve His people better.”
The ceremony concluded with the symbolic cutting of the celebration ribbon, group photographs, and a communal meal, a moment of unity for the Christian family.
