The 9th edition of Senator Lionel Papinatou Fonderson’s Inter-Service Football Tournament ended on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in a vibrant atmosphere marked by sportsmanship, unity and patriotism in Tiko. Organized as part of activities commemorating the 54th edition of Cameroon’s National Day celebration, the tournament brought together teams, supporters and community members from across the subdivision for a month-long football spectacle.
The grand finale which held at the GS Costains Field under the distinguished patronage of the Divisional Officer for Tiko Subdivision, Mr. Nokuri Samuel, saw the Tiko Council team narrowly defeat Minsec by one goal to nil in the male category. The encounter drew an enthusiastic crowd, reflecting the tournament’s growing popularity and its role in fostering social cohesion within the cosmopolitan municipality.
The closing ceremony also featured the award of appreciation and recognition medals to several personalities and institutions that contributed to the success of the competition. Among those honoured were the Divisional Officer, the Mayor of Tiko, members of the organizing committee, and the Station Manager of Tiko Council Community Radio, Ngong Ivo, among others.
Speaking to the press at the end of the tournament, Senator Lionel Papinatou Fonderson expressed satisfaction with the turnout and organization of the competition. He emphasized that the tournament was not a personal initiative but rather a collective event for the people of Tiko. “This is not the 9th edition of my tournament; it is the 9th edition of our tournament,” the senator remarked. He praised the population for embracing the initiative and highlighted the impressive performance of the players as well as the commitment of the organizing committee throughout the month-long event.
According to Senator Fonderson, the main objective of the tournament is to strengthen unity and peaceful coexistence among residents of Tiko, a town known for its diverse population drawn from different regions of Cameroon. He noted that football serves as a powerful tool for promoting living together and creating bonds among young people.
The senator further highlighted the importance of direct interaction with the population through sports activities. He explained that the football field provides a natural environment where people can freely express their concerns, opinions and aspirations, thereby helping leaders better understand the needs of the community.
A notable feature of this year’s competition was the participation of women in a gala match during the finals. Senator Fonderson revealed plans to fully integrate female teams into next year’s edition so they can compete throughout the tournament and contest a full-fledged final like their male counterparts.
Addressing spectators during the closing ceremony, the senator thanked the population of Tiko for consistently turning out to support the teams. He equally lauded the footballers, referees, medical personnel and security forces whose contributions ensured the smooth running of the tournament.
Special recognition was given to the commander of the fire brigade in Mutengene and the administrative authorities for their unwavering support. Senator Fonderson particularly commended the Divisional Officer for Tiko for his openness and commitment despite recently assuming office in the subdivision.
The senator concluded by reaffirming his commitment to sustaining the tournament as a platform for peace, unity and national integration. As Tiko joined the rest of the nation in celebrating Cameroon’s National Day on May 20, the successful organization of the inter-service football competition stood as a symbol of solidarity and harmonious living among the people of the subdivision.
